Two suspected illegal aliens from Mexico were apprehended after they allegedly left the scene of an accident. The two men were arrested north of Brainerd after leaving a hit-and-run accident near Hardee’s on Washington Street. Their car contained packaged marijuana.

(Photo) Gov. Rudy Perpich struck a relaxed pose Saturday on Mille Lacs Lake, as he kicked off the Governor’s Fishing Opener headquartered at Izaty’s Lodge. Despite two stints on the lake the governor failed to hook an elusive walleye.

By means of air express, the Washington High School band and the plumes for its hats will meet in Winnipeg tomorrow. The uniforms for band members and director Dan Campbell arrived before the band left for Canada but the plumes didn’t make it, so they will be shipped direct.

80 years ago (1934)

Rain falling steadily since early morning brought smiles to farmers and housewives in the Brainerd area. Starting before daybreak, rain fell throughout the morning. Farmers were cheered after seeing their crops burned and seared by weeks of hot dry weather.

100 years ago (1914)

Herb Britton caught a 57-pound muscallonge (sic) this week and it required a dray to get the whale of a fish home. The head of this leviathan of the Mississippi River is on display at the Columbia Theatre.
