A pine plantation owned by Crow Wing County was destroyed this week after an arsonist set two fires and allowed them to burn out of control. They burned 25 acres of Norway pine located along County Road 102, and with a value of $11,500.

Bruce Bialka, with relief help from Greg Erickson in the fifth, checked Staples 11-3 for the Warriors 13th straight victory of the season. A 13-hit batting attack was paced by Brad Loch's triple and two singles, and Gary Borg's homer and single.

Before a sizeable opening night turnout at North Central Speedway, Dave Zettervall of Brainerd and Russ Ebert of Pequot Lakes drove their cars to double victories in the Hobby and Late Model Modified classes, said track publicist Keith Moilanen.

 

60 years ago (1951)

In what District 24 track coaches enviously referred to as “Brainerd's two-man track team,” Jim Smith and Jerry Hill individually scored 22 and 20 points respectively. Brainerd won the title with 60 points, with Wadena in 2nd with 36 and Sebeka in third.

80 years ago (1931)

C-I entered a fast field and bested the competition, winning the district track title with 50 points. Brainerd took second with 37. Eight records were broken, including Moikanen of Crosby with a pole vault of 10-9, and Holman of Brainerd high jumping 5-6.

 

100 years ago (1911)

The Rev. C. Hougstad, pastor of the Norwegian Danish Lutheran Church, left this afternoon for Catesville, Wisc., for a short visit with his aged parents. He will be absent about a week, therefore there will be no services next Sunday.
