Dropping driver’s education, raising fees for participating in sports and cutting back on field trips are among the ways the school board may use to produce a balanced 1994-95 budget. Because state aid has been frozen for three years, the board is looking for $500,000 in cuts.

An inmate suit to force air-conditioning of the Crow Wing County Jail took on a new look as the Minn. Civil Liberties Union asked to enter the case on behalf of the jail inmates. The MCLU called the lack of air-conditioning “cruel and inhuman punishment.”

40 years ago (1974)
A resolution calling for a September vote on fluoridation was approved by the Brainerd city council as 250 fluoride foes jammed the council chambers. Ignored was attorney Tom Fitzpatrick, who noted the city can’t call an election to vote on a law already passed by the state.
60 years ago (1954)
Construction of an oil and gas pipeline through Brainerd to the Twin Cities seemed nearer following the abandonment of the proposed Sioux pipeline to carry crude oil from the Williston, ND basin to the Midwest. If true, this means Brainerd could get natural gas.
80 years ago (1934)
Nosed out by one point for 2nd place, the Warrior track team finished 3rd in the regional meet at Moorhead. C-I’s strong team took 1st place easily, with Fergus Falls in 2nd. Bill Smith was Brainerd’s show, tied for 1st in the pole vault, tied for 2nd in high jump and took 3rd in shot-put.
