The state of Minnesota's suit against Potlatch and Sappi, Ltd. failed an attempt at mediation that had been urged by Judge Richard Zimmerman. The suit involves non-compete language in the sales agreement that would not allow a purchaser of the Brainerd mill to make fine coated paper, the exact product it was widely known for.

The Brainerd girls' track team will be sending six girls to state in seven events as the Warriors finished third in Section 8AA. Girls coach Geri Skogen, named Section Coach of the Year, says this is the largest group in her eight years here. On the boys side only two will go: Josh Augst and Chris French, who went one, two in the shot put.

Members of the local national Guard unit will leave for annual summer field training at Camp Ripley on June 2. Lesson plans have been prepared and field equipment has been issued. The convoy of troops will move immediately to bivouac where they will live in the field for four days and nights before a tactical night march back to camp.

Golfers of the Brainerd Country Club will make their annual trek to the Pine Beach Golf Course on Sunday, June 7 for Courtesy Day. Members are grouping up for the drive to conserve gas and tires. Green fees are without charge and Jack Madden, manager of Pine Beach, says the course is in fine condition.
100 years ago (1922)
This funny story comes from the Methodist church and concerns the Rev. E.A. Cooke. As he opened his Sunday sermon, he referred to the fact that he had broken his watch and would be glad to borrow one so he would not talk too long. The response was overwhelming as more than two dozen watches were immediately offered.

39/50: This truck belonged to Silas Hall's Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street).
