Hunting just over a mile from his house on the northern outskirts of Brainerd, “Smokey” Bill, proprietor of “Smokey” Bill's Tavern, just north of the city, killed a 300-pound deer. The deer is one of several reported taken just a short distance from Brainerd.

20 years ago (2002)

Paul Koering's 143-vote margin over Senate President Don Samuelson will be subject to an automatic recount starting today at the county auditor's office. State statute calls for a recount when the difference is less than one-half percent. The margin in this race is .43 percent. Neither candidate requested the recount.

30 years ago (1992)

History reveals it hasn't been an easy task negotiating a fire protection agreement between Brainerd and the Rural Fire Assn. Today is no different. After a year of talks, the association unanimously rejected the city's current proposal. But they did ask for a one-year extension of the current agreement to allow time for yet more talks.

40 years ago (1982)

A disappointed Brainerd school board committee learned yesterday that most Nisswa parents don't want to send their kids to Brainerd as part of a new program for sixth and seventh graders. As a result of the survey, Supt. Bob Gross will meet with parents on a possible “split class” with half staying in Nisswa and half coming to Brainerd.

60 years ago (1962)

Brainerd will be without city bus service beginning on Dec. 1, it was revealed at the city council meeting last night. Owner Lawrence Gallop said in a letter that a raise in insurance rates would make it impossible for him to continue the operation. A fare hike could not offset the insurance increase.

80 years ago (1942)

100 years ago (1922)
