20 years ago (2002)

It was an SUV vs. a train; the train won. Two people escaped serious injury when their vehicle collided with a train on Crooked Road, near Deerwood, just after noon yesterday. One person required attention at Cuyuna Range Medical Center. The vehicle sustained major damage to both front and rear.

30 years ago (1992)

The state girls' swim meet prelims marked the end of the season for senior Renee Linn and junior Crystal Ludwig. Linn, in the 100 back, and Ludwig, in the 100 breaststroke, failed to advance to the finals. In addition, head coach Joe Vrudny has stepped down as Warrior varsity coach to concentrate on coaching junior high swimmers.

40 years ago (1982)

60 years ago (1962)

Rod Sims and Andy Theisen, bowling on adjoining lanes for teams fighting for the lead in the Elks Bowing League, staged a red-hot bowling duel probably never seen before at Lake Region Lanes. Sims rolled a 234, 222, 233 for a 689, high series for the season. Theisen missed by just four pins, with a 213, 248, 224 for a 685 series.

80 years ago (1942)

Gov. Dwight Griswold of Nebraska has written a letter to the U.S. Office of Price Administration charging that gasoline rationing works a more severe hardship on states in the midwest – including Minnesota – than it does on eastern states. Even with a slightly larger gas allotment, small towns, like in the Brainerd area, are being discriminated against.

100 years ago (1922)

Phillip Holzman arrived from the Twin Cities this afternoon. Holzman has purchased a tract of land near Gull Lake and will go into the business of muskrat farming.
