20 years ago (2002)

Turning Franklin Junior High School into a performing arts center was one idea that kept kept surfacing at a community meeting at the school. The school district plans to close Franklin when the new middle school in Baxter opens. About 50 persons split into small groups for tours of the school.

30 years ago (1992)

The Warrior girls' swimming and diving team has won the academic all-state championship with a combined grade-point average of 3.96. The GPAs of the top 12 members of each team were used to determine a team's overall GPA.

40 years ago (1982)

What does it cost to run for State Senate? How much to run for county judge or commissioner? The county record went to Marianne Milloy, who spent $5,600 in a losing campaign against new judge Bob Kautz, who spent $3,600. Steve Wenzel spent $23,300 in a winning race over Howard Warnberg - $4,200 – for a senate seat.

60 years ago (1962)

Evert Holm, chair of the Chamber of Commerce Christmas decorations committee, said that 201 Brainerd businesses have contributed $6,185 for the purchase of 36 new lines of Christmas street decorations that will be lighted for the first time Thanksgiving evening. They were installed by the Water & Light Dept.

80 years ago (1942)

The federal government said that sales of coffee will stop at midnight tonight to give stores one week to stock shelves in preparation for rationing, which starts Nov. 29. Residents of Brainerd, like all others, will be limited to just one pound every five weeks – or approximately one cup per day.

100 years ago (1922)

Two men with their faces covered by handkerchiefs held up a group of replacement men (strike breakers) at their headquarters in the railroad shops last night and got away with $340. A poker game was underway, and one man held the players at gun point with a pistol while the other scooped up the money. They managed to get away.
