The Brainerd City Council’s effort to select a new police chief hit a snag when Acting Chief Ken Bjerkness announced no search was needed because, under the law, he is the chief. “I don’t think,” Bjerkness said, “that the council has anything to decide.”

Appointment of Floyd Emerson, 41, as editor of the Brainerd Dispatch was announced today by H. F. McCollough, publisher. Emerson comes from the Hammond, Ind. Times, and before that was city editor for papers at Watertown, S. Dakota, and Clinton, Iowa.

Cognizant of their obligation to do everything possible to aid the needy in Brainerd, and eliminate suffering and want during the coming winter, an army of 100 workers under chair Mrs. Sam Newman will start the drive for the Brainerd Community Relief Fund.
100 years ago (1912)
A mining lease was recently filed whereby Judge G.W. Holland leased his lands in south Brainerd to Martin Exploration for 50 years at a rate of 25 cents per ton of iron ore. A shaft will soon follow for this first Brainerd mine. Holland is a true Brainerd pioneer.
