For the second straight year, and the sixth time in the past seven, the Staples-Motley boys' cross country team ran away from the rest and captured the Class 1A state title. The Cardinals were led by Chad Brever in 9th place and Isaac Landecker in 20th, but the hero of the day was the lone senior, Chad Reichel, finishing 21st in his first state meet.

Two incumbents were ousted in yesterday's general election, with Jon Main topping Mary Sterner for Baxter mayor, and challenger Art Wagner beating eight-year incumbent Steve Sievek for county commissioner District 1. A newcomer to the Brainerd city council will be Dr. James Dehen, who prevailed over Tom Loudon.

He was guided by Dispatch employees, Gary Hassel and Larry Specht. It measured 48 inches long and 23 in girth at Nisswa Bait Shop, which took the photo.

The Pine River football team had its first unbeaten and untied football season since adopting the sport in 1938. Coach Dick Rezanka's Tigers opened with a 19-6 win over Sebeka and closed with a 21-13 win over Menahga, while shutting out five conference foes in between. They scored 196 points, giving up just 19.
80 years ago (1942)
Clem Ryan, local administrator for the War Transportation Committee, said today that “group riding arrangements, made in advance, will cushion the shock of gas rationing.” He urged car owners to begin planning their travel now so they aren't shocked when gas rationing starts this month.
100 years ago (1922)
What might have been a tragic accident was thwarted by quick action yesterday. Part of the new sewer being laid in Northeast saw a trench cave in, totally burying Ole Holm and partially covering Jack Hill. City inspector A.W. Osborne marked the spot where Holm disappeared until shovels could dig him out. Both men are hospitalized.

39/50: This truck belonged to Silas Hall's Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street).
