The Confidence Learning Center has been good for Brainerd, and Brainerd has been good for the center. So says Dick Endres, founder of the outdoor camp, who was named Friday as 1991 Brainerd Citizen of the Year. He will be honored with a banquet Nov. 23.

 

30 years ago (1981)

(Photo) Following a search of a Pelican Lake home, Brainerd officers Bruce London and Bruce Burke, and sheriff's captain Dick Ross, look over $10,000 in clothing and jewels stolen from the Plush Horse. A 33-year-old woman was arrested at her home.

40 years ago (1971)

(Photo) Whitefish Lake yielded the largest smallmouth bass entered at the Nisswa Bait Shop this season. Caught by John Palmer of Nisswa on a nightcrawler, it scaled 5 pounds, 15 ounces.

 

60 years ago (1951)

Although eliminated from contention for the Little Five conference crown this season, Washington High's Warriors hit the comeback trail with a smashing 45-7 win over Aitkin. Gup Hess had two TDs for Brainerd, and five others had one TD each.

 

80 years ago (1931)

Faced with the apparent need of a city appeal this fall for the care of Brainerd's needy during the winter, the Brainerd Community Relief Fund committee was encouraged to find $2,500 in its treasury. The total needed this winter will be at least $6,000.

 

100 years ago (1911)

John Carlson came to town yesterday with a string of fish that caused every sportsman's eyes to pop out in astonishment. It consisted of 15 black bass with a total weight of 60 pounds, caught in North Long Lake. He had the string photographed at depot park.
