Golly, what a gully! Crow Wing County's new landfill - a $3.46 million, five-acre hole in the ground - opens for business in four days. The old landfill received its last load of debris today. The old landfill, built 18 years ago for $60,000, will be closed.

30 years ago (1981)

40 years ago (1971)

An apparent misunderstanding in the Village of Baxter has left Tuesday's election with a wide open race for mayor. The name of Darrell Powers had been placed on the ballot, but he said it was without his knowledge. Incumbent Don Sande has declined to run for re-election.

60 years ago (1951)

Masked youngsters prowling through Brainerd streets tonight in search of “trick or treats,” will wear overcoats, mittens and overshoes. The young ghosts will plow through knee-deep snow. The annual Halloween parade this afternoon was abandoned.

80 years ago (1931)

Federal prohibition agents last night captured a truck loaded with 900 gallons of moonshine whiskey five miles northwest of Little Falls. Agents, acting on a tip, had been searching for it for two days. It had a flat and went into the ditch. The driver disappeared.

100 years ago (1911)

On his 200 acre farm on Gull Lake, Alderman James Elder is devoting time and attention to the propagation of pine trees, clearing brush as needed. It is historic land, for one section near the lake was site of the old Episcopal St. Columba mission 60 years ago.
