20 years ago (2001)

The Brainerd High School choir students planned to see the glory of Italy on their concert tour this fall. But the national terror events have forced cancellation of the biennial event. Director Mike Smith and other school officials are discussing an alternative site – possible elsewhere in Europe – and hope to reveal it at a Nov. 5 meeting with students and families.

30 years ago (1991)

Trying to ski uphill is a good analogy for Ski Gull's efforts to keep its ski hill open this year, but the board of directors plans to make a go of it, said president Tom Steiger. The non-profit, which borrowed $800,000 in 1988 to make improvements, was then hit with an avalanche of taxes by the state and the IRS. Local banks are trying to help.

40 years ago (1981)

(Edit.) The citizens of Brainerd can look at themselves with justified pride today. The United Way campaign is already over the top, with more money coming in. The drive, chaired by Tom Isle, has $98,000 in against a goal of $95,000. And this with the quickest campaign ever and in a time of a sagging economy.

60 years ago (1961)

80 years ago (1941)

At 3 a.m. today, Bill Herrman stepped out of his engine cab after bringing the M&I train down from International Falls. If there was a tear in his eye it's because it was his last run, and he's retiring after 45 years on the railroad. Herrman, 65, started as a fireman and became an engineer in 1900. He's the M&I's longest-serving employee.

100 years ago (1921)

The Brainerd Bowling Assn. will hold its annual meeting tonight in the club rooms of the Chamber of Commerce. Rules will be made for the conduct of bowling leagues this winter. Anyone interested in bowling should attend the meeting as called by the secretary.
