The Brainerd City Council agreed to purchase the burned-out lot at S. 7th and Front Streets on two conditions. First, that the owner bring the abstract up to date and, second, that a downtown business group raise $18,000 to pave the lot for parking.

Randy Matich was found not guilty of murder and arson yesterday by a jury of six men and six women who deliberated three hours. Matich had been charged with setting the house fire that killed Dorothy Lieber and her son John. He was immediately released.

The saloon in Sylvan owned by Pat McCabe, a former Brainerd resident, burned to the ground last night between 9 and 10 p.m. It entailed a loss of $4,000 on which there was only $1,000 insurance. McCabe was sleeping and barely escaped with his life.
