Peter Gaustad is beyond being a senior citizen. At 103, he's old. But he still has his workbench in his room where he works on woodwork and crafts. Today he'll be greeting friends at his birthday party at the Bethany Good Samaritan Village where he lives.

 

30 years ago (1981)

City residents could experience yet another increase in electrical rates early next year. The Water and Light Board learned their supplier, MP&L, would increase rates by 25 percent soon.

40 years ago (1971)

Dr. Gene Bierhaus, co-captain of the unbeaten 1938 Warrior football team under Coach Ben Taylor, is now earning praise for his untiring work as chief veterinarian for the Colorado Racing Commission. He is an international expert on doping of race horses.

 

60 years ago (1951)

Checked completely the first period, Washington High School's Warriors smashed away for three touchdown in the second stanza and went on to a 28-0 win over the Staples Cardinals. 

 

80 years ago (1931)

While a companion honked impatiently in their getaway car, three nervous bandits robbed the State Bank of Foreston (near Milaca) of $5,200. Sheriff Little blocked Crow Wing county highways, and Chief Templeton watched Brainerd roads for the gang.

 

100 years ago (1911)

There is a pickled tarantula on display at Mann's grocery store which was captured by J. C. Higbee of the Presley fruit company. The spider was found crawling on a bunch of bananas in a Duluth warehouse. He has a wicked head and is supplied with ten hairy legs.
