Backus Memorial and Old Timer's Weekend planned

BACKUS-The 47th annual Backus Area Old Timers Weekend including an all-school reunion, luncheon, Sunday dinner, dance and Memorial Day services will all be May 25-28.

Activities begin at the American Legion with a social and meat raffle at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 25. On May 26, the Old Timer's Committee is sponsoring the community 18th all-school reunion and lunch 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Backus City Hall. Cost: $5.

On May 27, the Frankie Lamb Band initiates its 14th season at the Legion, appearing from 2-5 p.m., playing classic country, pop, old-time and swing. A chicken dinner for $9 will follow. The dinner is a benefit for the Wild Clover and Hooves, Paws and Claws, 4-H clubs.

Area churches on May 27 have invited visitors and residents to attend the "church of your childhood."

The Legion, Auxiliary and Sons of the Legion will conduct Memorial Day services at Backus Evergreen Cemetery at 10 a.m. May 28 and following that at Ponto Lake Cemetery.

Washington High School class of 1965 to meet for lunch

WHS class of 1965 will meet for lunch 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 21, at Valeri Ann's in Ossipee Corners, north of Merrifield.

The Center's Morning Club to meet

The Center's Morning Club will meet 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at The Center, 803 Kingwood St., Brainerd.

The presenter will be Terri Weyer from Meals on Wheels.

Wadena Whirlaways to host dance

WADENA-The Wadena Whirlaways Square Dancers will host a dance Thursday, May 24, at the VFW in Wadena.

Brian Freed is the caller and the cuer is Donna Stone. The theme is patriotic.

Plus dancing begins at 7:30 p.m. and mainstream dancing at 8 p.m.

Brainerd Legion upcoming events

Voting for Legion Post officers will take place from 4-7 p.m. Monday, May 21.

The following groups will meet: Gambling Oversight Committee at 6 p.m., the Executive Board at 6:30 p.m., the Post Membership meeting at 7:15 p.m. and the Auxiliary Membership meeting at 7 p.m.

The special dinner for Friday, May 25, will be Bob Harting's barbecue ribs for $11. Walleye is also available for $11. Serving begins at 5 p.m.

Area senior dances

Area senior dance will be from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, at the Motley Ten-Hi with music by Jerry's Dance Band.

Brainerd Area Retired Educators meeting planned

The Brainerd Area Retired Educators will meet for a noon luncheon at 11:45 a.m. Monday, May 21, at Prairie Bay. Order from the menu for lunch.

Speaker will be Steve Kohls, photographer at the Brainerd Dispatch.

All retired teachers and administrators in the lakes area are welcome to attend.
