■ Brainerd Lakes Area Audubon Society program planned

Steve Kohls, Brainerd Dispatch photographer and instructor of photography at Central Lakes College and with the Minnesota School of Diving including underwater photography, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Northland Arboretum in Brainerd for the Brainerd Lakes Area Audubon Society meeting.

Kohls has traveled to Alaska for the past four years to photograph brown bears during the salmon run. Join us as Kohls shares his photos of these bears as they fish and interact with each other. Next September, Kohls will be traveling to Kaktovik to photograph polar bears after the village takes a bowfin whale on Labor Day weekend.

This program is sponsored by the Brainerd Lakes Area Audubon Society and the Northland Arboretum. The program is free and open to anyone with an interest in nature. Refreshments will be provided. BACKUS - The Backus Legion will feature a hot turkey sandwich on its menu from 5 p.m. until gone Jan. 24 for $5 a plate.

The post’s meat raffle will start at 5:30 p.m. followed by bingo at 7:30 p.m.

Sunday afternoon cribbage at 1 p.m. continues through Feb. 23, with the exception of Feb. 16 when Frank Lamb’s Frankly Country Band returns from 2 to 6 p.m. for the monthly Sunday dance.

■ North Central Beekeepers
to meet

BAXTER - The North Central Beekeepers will meet 7 p.m. Monday at the Northland Arboretum in Baxter.

The program will focus on the repair, assembly and maintenance of bee equipment. Also, orders for spring bees will be taken at that time.

■ 17th annual buffalo raffle

PIERZ - The 17th annual buffalo raffle, sponsored by the Pierz Knights of Columbus, will be Jan. 25 at the Pierz Ballroom. Tickets are $10 each and are available from any KC member or several area businesses.

The drawing will be at 8:15 p.m. Music will be provided by the Waltzateer Band. Beer, wine coolers, set-ups available. Need not be present to win. The buffalo feed will be from 4-8 p.m. Cost: $6.

Grand prize is $1,000 and 50 pounds of buffalo meat donated by Curtis and Jim Theis. There will be more than $13,000 in prizes. Half of the proceeds donated to the American Cancer Society, the remainder to benefit Pierz Knights of Columbus.
