WILLMAR - A mass medical situation at a Jennie-O Turkey Store production plant in Willmar has caused a number of employees to be hospitalized tonight.
Willmar police responded to a call around 7:23 p.m. tonight of a possible chemical leak at the Jennie-O Turkey Store facility at 1535 30th St. S.W. in Willmar that was making employees sick, said Willmar Police Sgt. Michael Jahnke. He said a total of 30 employees are exhibiting symptoms, like coughing and vomiting.
Six employees have been transported to the hospital and the rest are currently being treated on a bus outside of the factory until they can be transported. Willmar police and others currently have not found evidence of a chemical leak and are searching for the cause of illness.
Responding to the incident were Willmar Police, Willmar Ambulance and Willmar Fire Department.
"We are working with local authorities and investigating the matter thoroughly," said Pat Solheid, Jennie-O Turkey Store vice president of human resources and administration, in a statement late Friday.
"The fire department is conducting a review of the plant and at this time, has not found anything unusual. Our employees are being evaluated by local healthcare professionals this evening."
