Board of Education - Regular School Board Meeting
Monday, March 15, 2021
The regular monthly meeting of the Pillager Board of Education was called to order by Chair Sara Nagel on Monday, March 15, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. in the school media center. Other board members present were Becky Bennett, Kassandra Nelson and Steve Uban. Also present was Superintendent Michael Malmberg, School Board Secretary Lori Blumke and interested staff. Absent was Brian Grimsley and Randy Posner.
First order of business was the Pledge of Allegiance

Chair Sara Nagel began by asking if there are any additions/deletions/changes to the agenda. Steve Uban moved; Becky Bennett seconded to accept the agenda as presented.
The motion passed unanimously.

Personnel Committee met Wednesday, February 17, 2021
Sara Nagel moved; Steve Uban seconded to approve the Penmac Staffing Services contract for Educational Support Services effective July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2023. The motion passed unanimously.
Sara Nagel moved; Steve Uban seconded to approve the Penmac Staffing Services contract for Custodial Services effective July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2023. The motion passed unanimously.
Sara Nagel moved; Kassandra Nelson seconded to approve the Leave of Absence for Director of Teaching and Learning, Dave Olson. The motion passed unanimously.
Chair Sara Nagel shared that the Committee also discussed preliminary staffing for next school year, contract negotiations and health insurance quotes will soon go out for bid.
Curriculum Committee
Director of Teaching and Learning Dave Olson submitted a written report which included information regarding: ACP Projects update, science standards and pilots, career programs, after school technology offerings, Personalized Learning Summit for elementary SBR leadership team, Spelling Bee and Math Masters.
Kassandra Nelson moved; Steve Uban seconded to approve updates to the 2021-2022 Official School Calendar. The motion passed unanimously.
Activities Committee met Thursday, February 25, 2021
Becky Bennett, Committee Assistant noted that the Committee met and discussed Minnesota Department of Health Sports Quarantine guidance, winter sports participation, plan for spring sports, elementary wrestling, high school musical, Community Education Advisory Committee update and Auditorium Grand Opening plan and schedule.
Facilities Committee
Superintendent Malmberg shared he is receiving bids for a Long-Term Facilities Analysis Study.
Budget Committee met Tuesday, March 2, 2021
Business Manager Missy Berry shared a new budget book program and presented the second revision of the 2020-2021 budget. The budget book can be found on the school's website.
Becky Bennett moved; Kassandra Nelson seconded to approve the 2nd revision of the 2020-2021 Budget as presented. The motion passed unanimously.
Becky Bennett moved; Kassandra Nelson seconded to approve the School Readiness fee schedule with no changes. The motion passed unanimously.
Strategic Plan
Superintendent Malmberg presented a copy of the Strategic Plan which has been updated by administration. Strategic Plan priorities were tracked by completed, ongoing or not competed. The 2020-2025 Strategic Plan can be found on the school's website.
Learning Model Plan
Superintendent Malmberg updated that there were 8 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the past 30 days and that as of last Friday, all students are back from quarantine and no staff are currently out for testing. He would recommend that all grade levels remain in the current learning model for the rest of the school year. Elementary grades K-4 in-person and secondary grades 5-12 are in a hybrid/in-person learning model with distance learning every Wednesday.
Postcard Mailing
Superintendent Malmberg informed the board that post cards have been sent out to around 70 students that left last year due to the pandemic and asked them to contact the school as to their plans for next year. So far 13 have said they will be returning.
Plan for Marketing of School - Student Video
Mr. Koel and the Video Editing class will produce a video to help promote the school and to market what is good about Pillager to help recruit new students and families.
Superintendent Malmbergs' Report
• High school principal Jason Savage is working on details for Prom and Graduation
• No school on Friday, April 2nd and Monday, April 5th
• Middle and High School Parent Teacher conferences are March 30th
• Meeting on Friday for ALC options and discussion
• Working on 2021-2022 Budget process
• Administration is planning staff development for August 2021
Chair Sara Nagel congratulated Superintendent Malmberg for being nominated for Region V Superintendent of the Year.
