With my Mitts partner out of the office this week, it's up to me to handle this week's column. I wish I had a recipe to share, but sadly I do not. What I do have is the winner and the answers to our spices and herbs guessing contest held at the Brainerd Dispatch fair booth last week at the Crow Wing County Fair.

The rain dampened our spirits a little and we certainly weren't as busy as we hoped we'd be. Only 12 people entered our contest. Some were fearful they'd completely bomb it while others just didn't think they'd do well enough to win. We allowed people to look and smell the spices and herbs, but no tasting allowed.

Katie Sumpter, Brainerd, and her mother, Heide Benedict, also of Brainerd, accepted the challenge and were the only two who got all 10 answers correct. We drew from the two of them and Sumpter ended up winning the juicer.

In order from one to 10, the correct answers were cilantro, oregano, parsley, basil, mint, cloves, turmeric, anise, nutmeg and bay leaves.

Thanks very much to all who participated. It was good to chat with people who stopped by our booth even if the weather wasn't ideal.

Maybe we'll see you next year at the fair!
