23rd annual Garrison Play Days set Friday-Sunday

GARRISON-The Garrison Commercial Club and volunteers will host Garrison Play Days Friday-Sunday, July 20-22, with most of the activities in downtown Garrison.

"It'll be nonstop action and fun starting at 11 a.m. Friday and running through 6 p.m. Sunday," Carolyn Huff, 2018 Garrison Play Days chairperson, said in a news release. "Our schedule is two full pages packed with something for everyone so it's no wonder why many people mark their summer calendars for it yearly. Attendees are not just from Garrison, they come from

Brainerd, Aitkin, Baxter, Onamia, Isle, Deerwood, Crosby and basically all over the state due to the summer vacationers."

The event kicks off at 11 a.m. Friday with a two-person scramble golf tournament at the Northwood Hills Golf Course. There will be a community dinner 5-7 p.m. Friday hosted by the Garrison Commercial Club and catered by the Green Lantern Bar and Grill.

A co-ed softball tournament will begin 6 p.m. Friday and live music by Lake Effect will begin 8 p.m. Cost is $5 and will be under the big tent.

Saturday events include an 8 a.m. breakfast, arts and crafts, softball and volleyball tournaments and the medallion clues will be released throughout the day. The parade begins at 11 a.m. featuring grand marshal Loren Larson and more than 40 floats/entries. There will be a free corn feed at noon at the VFW.

Kids Zone will be open 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., with almost a dozen carnival games, two inflatable obstacle courses, a double dry slide, toddler bounce houses and a bungee trampoline and rope climbing challenge. The annual Kids' Corn Coin Hunt will be at 1:30 p.m., the Home Run Derby at 1 p.m. and acoustic music by Chris Dobson is 1-3 p.m.

The second annual Play Days Bass Fishing tournament will be 1-5 p.m. on Borden Lake.

The Community Alliance Church will host movie night at 6 p.m. featuring "I Can Only Imagine." Live music by Hitfaced will start at 8 p.m. Admission is $5.

A propane burn near the Garrison Fire Department will take place at dusk.

Sunday events include a 7:30 a.m. pancake breakfast hosted by the Garrison Caregivers, softball and volleyball tournaments and a car show from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. between the Holiday StationStore and Y Club with more than 75 restored cars and trucks.

The Emergency Services Showcase will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the city park, where people may meet emergency responders and the vehicles they use such as squad cars, ambulances, fire trucks, tow trucks, a bomb squad unit and more. It will showcase the Minnesota State Patrol, Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Department of Natural Resources, Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe Tribal Police, Mille Lacs Health Care/Onamia Ambulance Services, Cuyuna Regional Medical Center Ambulance Services, North Memorial Ambulance Services, Saving Hearts Suicide Prevention, West Brainerd Auto Services, Anderson Brothers garage, Garrison Fire Department, the Crow Wing, Aitkin and Mille Lacs counties sheriff's offices, 911 dispatch and local first responder groups.

The North Memorial Air Care helicopter will land at 1 p.m. in the ball field. Smokey Bear also will make an appearance. Dynamite Reflections Entertainment will provide music 1-5 p.m. The VFW's second cribbage tournament will start at 4 p.m., with registration at 3:30 p.m.
