BHS A Cappella Choir to sing at educator's conference

The Brainerd High School (BHS) A Cappella Choir, under the direction of Brian Stubbs, will perform Feb. 13 at the Minnesota Music Educator's Conference in Minneapolis.

The Brainerd High School (BHS) A Cappella Choir, under the direction of Brian Stubbs, will perform Feb. 13 at the Minnesota Music Educator's Conference in Minneapolis.

The choir was selected last spring from more than 40 applicants to sing at Central Lutheran Church, a cathedral across the street from the Minneapolis Convention Center. The church is used for choral performances because of its exceptional acoustics.

Brian Stubbs, director of the choir, said "It is an exceptional honor to be chosen to sing at the conference ... Brainerd has every right to be proud."

Brainerd will share the concert with Northfield High School, also chosen last spring for the conference. The two choirs will combine to perform together at the end of their sets.

"Every time schools meet it is to compete," said Stubbs "We decided to bring the two groups together to create music. When we learn to work together we have success in life. This is a great way to model that for our students."

The day will be spent focused on the performance, with a morning rehearsal with Northfield, where the students will meet for the first time and put their shared piece together. After that, a sound check, lunch and concert. Choral directors from across Minnesota will come for the performance, and Stubbs has asked a couple to stay after to give the choir some feedback. Closing out the day, the choir will go to supper and attend a comedy performance as a celebration.

"After all the work for that moment, it's time to celebrate and relax a bit," said Stubs. " We have to hit it hard the next day, so it will be nice to have a little down time in between events."
