LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) - Chloe Moretz's "If I Stay" has launched solidly, drawing $1.1 million from Thursday night shows at the U.S. box office.
The YA tearjerker, backed by Warner Bros./New Line and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, has been forecast to take in $18 million to $20 million in 2,902 locations this weekend. The initial Thursday night numbers for shows at 7 p.m. on indicate that "Stay," directed by R.J. Cutler, will finish the weekend in that area.
"Stay" is expected to top The Weinstein Co.'s launch of "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For," which is bowing at 2,894 locations. The noir sequel to 2005's "Sin City" opened with $475,000 on Thursday night for shows at 9 p.m. on.
Projections have placed "A Dame to Kill For" at $15 million for the opening weekend.

Marvel/Disney's fourth weekend of "Guardians and the Galaxy" and Paramount's third weekend of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" should also each bring in between $14 million and $15 million during the weekend.
Sony's launch of football drama "When the Game Stands Tall" took in $425,000 on Thursday night from 2,180 locations from 7 p.m. showings. In April, Lionsgate's "Draft Day" opened with $350,000 on Thursday night.
"When the Game Stands Tall" has been forecast to finish between $8 million and $10 million in 2,670 locations.
