One Brainerd High School graduate, who released his full-length album “Elemental Rhapsody” in 2020, hasn’t let the pandemic slow him down from continuing his music career.
Robin Sedivy, who played in the BHS marching and jazz bands and now lives in St. Paul, announced the release of his upcoming album titled “GrayBeat LIVE.” The album will be available Friday, April 9, via downloading and digital streaming at youtu.be/7kD0bCSNVNU .
Sedivy calls his upcoming album of professionally mastered audio and video his best yet. The album is a collection of nine new songs and videos, and quite possibly the beginnings of a new form of multimedia altogether, he stated in an email. In “GrayBeat LIVE,” listeners will hear completely new and improvised versions of all his latest songs, hand-selected from a weekly series of live performances over the past six months.
“Prepare to be captivated by real-time 3D graphics and visuals, unique to each song, and also unique to every performance,” a news release promoting the album stated. “By creatively programming cutting edge visual technologies, new versions of his constantly evolving and always improvised collection of live songs change and respond to Robin’s improvised audio cues in an infinite number of different ways.”

Sedivy, who started his musical project called GrayBeat in 2016, produced his first Extended Play album in 2019 titled "Whaelstrom." This album “grounded in West African musical traditions ... combined fictional storytelling, characters and emotions, as the listener is taken on an enthralling journey, comforted by intelligent polyrhythms and intertwined melodies, while progressing through a panorama of emotions.”
Sedivy said the making of “GrayBeat LIVE” was a journey like no other, and the unlikely and unforeseen product of a series of unexpected events, many serendipitous.
“When I first envisioned what a ‘GrayBeat live’ performance would be, I knew I wanted to make something bold, a new and unique form of live interactive experience, taking my own abilities as a drummer and live instrumental improvisational performer, and combining it with the instinct and abilities of a live DJ,” he said. “I figured that if I could figure out a way to meld together elements from the world of live instrumental performances and electronic DJs, I would not only be able to bring GrayBeat to the dance floor, but I’d also likely end up creating a brand new form of live entertainment.”

Sedivy also announced the release of his new single “By the Hand” set to go live April 16.

Sedivy, the producer behind GrayBeat, has been working behind the scenes in recent months to bring this new vocal-based musical transformation to life.

The BHS alum developed and called upon a new set of skills, recording and mixing his own vocals for the first time. As the song evolved into a rhythm and blues style love song, he enlisted his wife to sing backup. He worked with her voice to bring home the magical expression of love and solidarity transcribed into the lyrics, lyrics that are all about the first time they met, the news release stated.
