Robin Sedivy, a Brainerd High School graduate, released his first ever self-produced extended play album titled "Whaelstrom" this year.
Sedivy, who currently lives in St. Paul and played in the high school marching and jazz bands, released the EP under his new musical project. Sedivy started the project in 2016 called GrayBeat.
"Grounded in West African musical traditions, he embarks on a highly-creative and genre-morphing affair with 'Whaelstrom,'" according to a news release. "Combining fictional storytelling, characters and emotions, the listener is taken on an enthralling journey, comforted by intelligent polyrhythms and intertwined melodies, while progressing through a panorama of emotions."
Sedivy played with The Magic Mushponies & Zion Tribe and for a number of original Minnesota acts, including Dred I Dread and The Macalester African Music Ensemble. A couple of years ago, he decided to stop being just a drummer and started making his own music.
"This posed a new challenge for me, as I had the challenge of playing, composing and mixing all the parts," he stated in an email. "However, I soon realized that a whole album of songs was accumulating, along with a whole inter-galactic fictional story to be told with the music.

"I took a couple years to teach myself audio production from scratch on a makeshift home studio, but I wasn't willing to release any material until it sounded professional."

Sedivy currently is working on a full-length long playing release slated for 2020.
