■ Heartland Poets to meet
Heartland Poets, a chapter of the League of Minnesota Poets, will meet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the large room of the Brainerd Public Library. After a brief business meeting, a short program entitled “Conquering Writer’s Block” will be presented. Bring copies of a poem-in-progress so that others may better appreciate the poem.

■ Just For Kix dancers to perform Saturday
Brainerd Just For Kix dancers will perform Saturday at the State Kick-off Show for the Warrior Dance Team at the Brainerd High School gymnasium.

Shows are 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for students.
All ages of all dancers from the Just For Kix Studio will perform. There will be a variety of tap, ballet, kick, jazz, lyrical and hip hop.
The Warrior Dance team will perform their state kick routine, “Going up in Flames” and their jazz routine “So Cold.”
The dancers also will do a father-daughter routine to “Footloose.”
The performances will be a casual “sporty” show, in which everyone cheers on the Warrior Dance Team. There will be no lighting or special effects.
■ FARM GIRLS book event scheduled
BAXTER - Authors and sisters Candace Simar and Angela F. Foster of “Farm Girls,” will present a reading and book signing from 12-2 p.m. Saturday at Book World in Baxter, with the reading scheduled at 12:30 p.m.

“Farm Girls,” published in January by RiverPlace Press, is a book of stories and reflections of two sisters’s growing up on a family farm. Simar, a writer and poet from Pequot Lakes, carries a passion for Minnesota history and her Scandinavian heritage. She is the author of the Abercrombie Trail series novels, including “Birdie,” winner of the 2012 Western Writers of America Spur Award. Foster, a poet and memoirist, teaches creative writing at The Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis and is a freelance editor. She lives on a farm in rural Pine City.
■ Madhatters to present ‘Do Not Disturb’
WADENA - Madhatters Community Theatre will present “Do Not Disturb” by Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore at three different venues.
The show will be performed Feb. 21-23 at The Cove in Wadena; Feb. 28 to March 1 at the New York Mills VFW; and March 2-3 at the Otter in Ottertail.
Tickets are $25 and are available at Thrifty White, An Open Book and The Cove in Wadena; VFW and the library in New York Mills; and Boll Realty and The Otter in Ottertail.
“Do Not Disturb” consists of six scenes that take place in a hotel room. Some of the scene themes are: “unfulfilled lust, the making of a blue movie, a wedding gone awry and an in-advertent murder.”
■ Gull Lake Idol to begin Feb. 21
LAKE SHORE - Bar Harbor in Lake Shore is starting its own “American Idol” and are calling it Gull Lake Idol.

Gull Lake Idol will be held Thursday nights and will begin Feb. 21. People can qualify every Thursday until the finals night. The qualifying nights are Feb. 21, 28 and March 7, 14 and 21 and the finals are planned for March 28. Judging is based on singing, stage presence and overall presentation.
Pre-registration is encouraged. People can register at www.gulllakeidol.com . Entry fee is $10 and due the night before you sing. All contestants must be 21 or older.
■ Breakfast and bake sale set
NISSWA - The Legacy Chorale of Greater Minnesota will be holding a Winter Waffle Breakfast and Bake Sale fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 23 at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa. Dad’s Belgian Waffles, St. Cloud, will be providing the food for the breakfast; the menu includes made-from-scratch, malted Belgian waffles, sausages, nine flavors of syrup and fresh whipped cream and juice, milk or coffee.
Baked goods from chorale members also will be sold.
Tickets are $8 for ages 13 and up, $5 for children 5-12 and children under age 5 are free. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or in advance from chorale members, at the Brainerd Dispatch or at Bethany Bookstore in Baxter.
The Legacy Chorale of Greater Minnesota, now in its 11th season, is a non-profit arts organization led by Artistic Director Sarah Aamot. There are currently 58 singers in the chorale, representing 16 area communities: Aitkin, Baxter, Brainerd, Breezy Point, Crosslake, Crosby, Deerwood, East Gull Lake, Garrison, Hackensack, Ironton, Little Falls, Merrifield, Nisswa, Pequot Lakes and Pillager.

■ Brainerd dancers compete in
United We Dance
Seven Brainerd Just For Kix teams recently competed in a United We Dance competition held at Hallenbeck Hall on the campus of St. Cloud State University.
The fourth- and fifth-grade Mini Kix class took second place dancing to “Someone Like You.”
The Starlites Kick class took first place performing to a Nutcracker re-mix.
The Rising Stars took first place dancing to “You Better Work.”
The sixth- and seventh-grade kick team placed second dancing to “Hit The Lights.”
The Rec Hip Hop seventh- through 12th-grade team took fist place performing to “Snap Backs and Tattoos.”
The fifth-ninth grade lyrical performed an exhibition lyrical to “The Prayer Of The Children.”

■ Brainerd connection in Pam Tillis Acoustic Trio
WALKER - The Pam Tillis Acoustic Trio will perform at 4 p.m. Monday at the Northern Lights Casino Hotel and Event Center in Walker.
Mary Sue Englund, a member of the Trio, along with Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan, plays guitar, keyboard and fiddle, and one of her songs will be included on a future Pam Tillis CD.
Englund has a Brainerd lakes area connection as her mother-in-law Pat Olesen from Outing donated deluxe, signed copies of the three Jon Hassler’s short story collections published by Afton Press and 50 regular editions to be sold at Central Lakes College (CLC), with proceeds going to Jon’s CLC Foundation Scholarship.
■ Festival of the Arts local artists sought
PEQUOT LAKES - Local artists who want to be a part of the Pequot Lakes Festival of the Arts, which has been a community wide celebration of artistic talents for the past 30 years, can now register. Visual artists who would like to have a table at the Festival of the Arts to be held March 14 should call Dave Guenther at 218-568-9252.
The festival begins at 5:30 p.m. and continues until 8 p.m.
