NISSWA-Members of the Minnesota Orchestra will be featured May 8 in a Musical Bestiary of chamber music appropriate for audiences of all ages.
The concert will close the 2015-16 Winter Series of the Lakes Area Music Festival and will be presented at 7 p.m. at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Nisswa. Like other concerts presented by the festival, the event is offered free of charge and open to anyone interested in attending.
By air, sky or ground, each piece on the program is inspired by a different species.
Fly high alongside the strings in Franz Joseph Haydn's most popular quartet nicknamed "The Lark," then a zoological journey through selections from Camille Saint-Saens' beloved "Carnival of the Animals." Finally, dive deep into Franz Schubert's lighthearted "Trout Quintet" for piano, violin, viola, cello and bass.
Minnesota Orchestra musicians Jonathan Magness and Kathryn Bennett, both on violin; Sam Bergman on viola; and Kathryn Nettleman on bass will be joined by Twin Cities pianist Mary Jo Gothmann and cellist Scott Lykins, director of the music festival. Each musician has participated in multiple concerts on the festival roster.
In addition to this concert, the ensemble will visit on May 9 to three elementary schools in the Brainerd School District, performing for more than 1,000 students as a part of the organization's Music Mentors Project.
The 2016 Festival season will run July 31 through August 21 with concerts at Tornstrom Auditorium, with additional educational and outreach programs for audiences of all ages.
More than 140 professional musicians from around the country will come to the lakes area to collaborate on chamber music, symphony orchestra, opera and ballet.
