Brainerd Public Library book club to meet

The Brainerd Book Club will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, via Zoom for its next book discussion: “The Girl with the Louding Voice” by Abi Daré.

The inspiring story of a teenage girl growing up in a rural Nigerian village, who longs to get an education so that she can find her “louding voice” and speak up for herself.

Despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles in her path, Adunni never loses sight of her goal of escaping the life of poverty so that she can build the future she chooses for herself. Copies of this book are available at the Brainerd Public Library’s front desk.

Stage North to hold auditions for ‘Anything Goes’

The Stage North Theatre Co. is holding auditions for our upcoming musical “Anything Goes” at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, and 3 p.m. Saturday at the Franklin Arts Center in Brainerd.

Originally scheduled for its local premier in March of 2020, the beloved musical comedy’s debut in the area was postponed due to COVID-19.

“Anything Goes” includes music and lyrics by Cole Porter. The story concerns madcap antics aboard an ocean liner bound from New York to London.

The 1934 musical introduced such songs as "Anything Goes,” "You're the Top,” “It’s De-Lovely,” ”Blow, Gabriel, Blow” and "I Get a Kick Out of You."

Many roles are available for men, women, younger, older, singers, dancers and actors. Dance workshops will be offered 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, and Thursday for those wishing to receive instruction.

“Anything Goes” will be performed March 24-26 and 31 and April 1-2 at the Franklin Arts Center on Kingwood Street in Brainerd..

Full moon snowshoe hike at the Northland Arboretum

Come to the Northland Arboretum at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, for a guided snowshoe hike under a full moon.

Bring snowshoes and/or winter boots and plan for an hour hike. If it's cloudy, bring a headlamp. Warm up after the hike with hot chocolate and cookies.

The cost is $10 for Arb members or $20 for nonmembers. Class size limited- Payment due upon registration. Class fee is nonrefundable.
