NISSWA-The Nisswa-stämman Scandinavian Folk Music festival returned for its 19th year Friday and Saturday, June 8-9, in Nisswa.

Nisswa-stämman was founded in 2000, when Paul Wilson and Mary Abendroth organized the first event after a summer in Scandinavia attending spelmansstämmor-Swedish "folk musicians' gatherings," which aim to bring together musicians and dancers to learn from each other as much as to draw an appreciative audience.

From an initial 51 Minnesota musicians and 775 participants in 2000, the 2018 stämma in Nisswa brought together approximately 150 Minnesota artists plus 15 others, most from Scandinavia, to teach and perform among over 1,900 participants.

The bands came from Scandinavia. Two groups came from Sweden, one from Norway and one was a combination of Danish/Finnish band. All of the musicians are highly acclaimed in their fields and several have performed at Nisswa-stämman before, including the powerhouse husband/wife duo of Harald Haugaard and Helene Blum who along with Antti Järvelä highlighted the festival this year.
