■ Life Fest planned

EMILY - St. Emily’s will host Life Fest, an old-fashioned get together from 1-9 p.m. Sunday at 39922 Lake Street, Emily. Mass will be held at 4 p.m. There will be a silent auction, live auction, dunk tank, beer garden, food, games for kids and adults, a meat raffle and live music by the Chmielewski Band and DJ Donnie G. Life Fest raffle tickets will be sold for $2. Tickets available at St. Emily’s Church or Immaculate Heart Parish office.

■ August Fest in Randall

RANDALL - St. James Parish, Randall, will have August Fest on Aug. 11 beginning with Mass at 10 a.m. There will be chicken and ham dinner. Cost: adults, $8; children ages 6-10, $4; children 5 and under, free. There will be a country store, cake/pie walk, bingo, face painting, ice cream stand, music, kids’ games and entertainment, home country cooking, Gorka’s Catering from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. A large raffle will be drawn at 5 p.m. $2 per ticket. There will be an auction at 3 p.m. Randall Lions beverage stand on the grounds and a children’s table of toys raffle.

gospel concert


MALMO - On Saturday night at 7 p.m. Malmo Free Church will present the annual local music artists’ night. Due to the sound system this concert will be inside the air-conditioned church. Malmo Church is located near the junction of highways 47 and 18 on Highway 18 near the northeast corner of Lake Mille Lacs.

■ Praise the Lord concert in Walker

WALKER - The 6th Annual Praise the Lord Concert will be held at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Aug. 16 at Calvary Church in Walker.

The concerts are free and open to the public but as a fund raiser for the nonprofit organization Faith in Action for Cass County freewill donations will be accepted at the door. Funds collected at the concert directly support the work of Faith In Action for Cass County.

The concerts will be emceed by Mona Bean of Backus. Carol Gustafson and “P.J.” Matthews will provide pre-concert music and the feature of the event will be the southern gospel quartet, Calvary Four Plus One, with Jeff Corn, Doug Pitt, Chet Kelm and Jim Olander. Other local talent performing for the fund raiser will include Theresa Eclov, Marilyn Bonk, Pamela Burnett, Ron Brauer, Russ and Loralee Torkelson, Pastor Judy Gustafson and Ryan Pels. Mitzie Pearl will be back again to share memories of Cousin Minnie with concert-goers. Minnie Pearl was a member of the Grand Ole Opry cast from 1940 until her death in 1996. She was one of country music’s most widely recognized comedians and she always appeared in a straw hat with a $1.98 price tag hanging on it.

GARRISON - Cokesbury’s Everywhere Fun Fair Where God’s World Comes Together vacation Bible school will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday through Aug. 9 for preschool through sixth grade at Light of the Cross Lutheran Church in Garrison, just two blocks in from Super Valu on Monroe Street.

■ Jumpin’ Jehosafats to perform

PEQUOT LAKES - The Twin Cities jazz group, Jumpin’ Jehosafats will be performing at 4 p.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church in Pequot Lakes. Jazz and gospel selections are on the program. Donations benefit Operation Classroom Ministries in Africa.

■ Bethel Lutheran
to host Teen
Challenge Choir

Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge announced that Bethel Lutheran South Long Lake will host the choir in a free performance on Sunday. The choir will perform at their 9 a.m. service. The MNTC Choir is known statewide, having performed at over 230 churches in 2012.

The choir’s contemporary gospel and praise songs will be accompanied by inspiring client stories of addiction recovery. You will be inspired by the message of hope brought by the MnTC choir. The event is open to the public and all are welcome. A potluck lunch will be served following the performance.

Bethel is located at the intersection of Thompson Road and Five Mile Road.

■ Teen Challenge Choir to appear at other area venues

The MN Adult and Teen Challenge choir will be performing at several locations in the Brainerd lakes area. The schedule is as follows: Sunday, Grace Covenant Church, Little Falls; Aug. 11, Crosslake Evangelical Free Church and First Baptist Church in Baxter (6 p.m. service); Aug. 15, Bandstand in the Park with The Center, 7 p.m.; and Aug. 18, Staples Alliance Church, Staples.


The residents of the Central Minnesota Campus in Brainerd will perform a number of songs as well as share their stories of hope and healing from addiction.

Bethlehem Lutheran

Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brainerd would like to announce our intergenerational vacation Bible school for Monday through Thursday which includes arts and crafts, games and storytelling. Free dinner starts at 5:30 p.m. and activities will follow from 6-8 p.m. This summer the theme for VBS is Praise: Where kids get down and lift God high. ■ Summer Bible school at Trinity Lutheran

Kingdom Rock will be the theme for the 2013 vacation Bible school program at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd. The week-long adventure is scheduled for Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. until noon. Registrations are being accepted through Sunday. There is a registration fee of $20 per child.

At Kingdom Rock VBS, kids will enjoy discovering important truths in fresh new ways and will live what they’ve learned each day. The Bible-themed adventure program will have different activities for age groups 4 years of age through 5th grade. Some of the many activities will include singing, skits, crafts, Bible theatre presentations, food and outdoor adventures.

■ The Rev. Ford
to be installed

The Rev. Mark Ford will begin as pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Brainerd Sunday. His installation service will be at 4 p.m. Aug. 11. The community is invited to attend.

Pastor Ford was raised on a cattle ranch in western Nebraska, graduated from the University of Nebraska with majors in animal science, agricultural journalism and general agriculture and completed his ministerial studies at Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey.

Ford has pastored Presbyterian churches in Blackduck, Kelliher, Philip, S.D., Interior, S.D., and Silver Lake. He volunteered with a construction crew that went to Minnesota Valleys Presbytery’s sister presbytery in Guatemala in February to build a manse.

■ Ceremony of Women’s Songs at UCC

A Ceremony of Women’s Songs will be performed at 10 a.m. Sunday at First Congregational United Church of Christ. Under the direction of Diane Hauan, the service features vocal soloists Rhonda Schwartz, Katarina Schwartz, Jan Morton, Shon Bowman and Evelyn Sonnichsen and oboist Kaarin Hanske. The photographs of Joey Halvorson add a visual dimension to the performance. Composed by Kathy Wonson Eddy and Robert Eddy, the combination of choral music and narration celebrates the experiences of women from the Bible and provides a new perspective on their lives. Songs include “Rainy Day Blues (Noah’s wife), “Lydia’s Song,” “Turn Around” (Lot’s Wife), “Mary’s Lullaby” and “God Has Made Laughter for Me” (Sarah). ■ Backus Community vacation Bible school

BACKUS - Lakeside Baptist Church in Backus, vacation Bible school will be Monday through Aug. 9 from 6-8:45 p.m. All children ages three through sixth grade are welcome. This year’s theme is I.D. Investigation Destination - Follow Clues to the King of Kings. The mission’s emphasis will be Operation Liberia: Building a Christian School. Powerful Tools for Caregivers is a six-session program offered by Lutheran Social Services from 9-11 a.m. starting Tuesday and ending Sept. 10. Sessions will be held in the upper room of First Lutheran Church, Brainerd.

Dessert on the Deck this week will be hosted by Clarice Renschler from 3-4 p.m. Wednesday in the Koinonia.

FLC Youth will be on a trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wednesday through Aug. 11.

■ St. Joseph’s summer
festival planned

PIERZ - St. Joseph’s Church in Pierz will have its summer festival on Sunday. Polka Mass will be at 10 a.m. featuring music by Dale Dahmen and the Polka Beats, followed by the chicken/ham and sauerkraut dinner with all the trimmings in the church basement from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (all facilities are air-conditioned). Cost: $9.50, adults; $5, children 6-11; children under 5 are free. The day is filled with games for the children, bingo, silent auction, quilt wheel, food and pop stands, music, beer stand, bake sale, book sale, country store, pull tabs and fancywork. Grand raffle drawing is at 4:30 p.m. with more than $8,560 in cash prizes.
