Clergy View: There is a reason to hope

Knowing that it is only Jesus who can truly offer peace, my encouragement for anytime, but especially now, is to turn to Him.

Every generation can look to a time in their collective knowledge where all seemed lost, where things couldn’t possibly get worse.

Sometimes, the ship was righted, peace returned, justice was served and lives continued with some semblance of normalcy or at least one of acceptance and contentment.

Today feels like one of those times we’re staring out over the bow of the ship and nothing on the horizon looks very promising.

And yet, there is a reason to hope. Not just to hope, but to be confident in what lies ahead.

Jesus said, “I have said this to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

It isn’t easy to look at what our current situation is, or really any time in our history, and choose to be at peace instead of utter turmoil or anxiousness. But we must remember that this world is not our home. We will face pain, sadness and hardship. That comes as part of the package of life. We have the ability to choose how we react to the adversity of this world. Our reaction can not only bring peace to our own lives, but can bring peace to those around us.

Jesus tells us that while we are surrounded by suffering, He is our peace. Jesus is the way maker, the stronghold, the name above all names. This knowledge is solid and we can take confidence that no matter what we are currently dealing with, He has already overcome it all, even death. Jesus offers us this peace when he says, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Matthew 11:28-29. Jesus does not tell us that we will be burdened by the trials of this world and we should just push through them. A yoke is a device that is worn by two and Jesus offers us this yoke as He will walk alongside of us in all situations.

Knowing that it is only Jesus who can truly offer peace, my encouragement for anytime, but especially now, is to turn to Him. While our ship is being tossed in this great sea, when we feel every piercing blow from the stress and disorder all around us, it is the perfect time to turn our eyes to Christ and take comfort in His strength and assurance.

We do not live for this world; we live for the promise of heaven. Love God. Love others. Neither is always easy, but both are possible.

“Always be ready to give an explanation for your hope.” 1 Peter 3:15.
