A gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Ely is a popular destination for camping, fishing, snowmobiling and other outdoor activities. Its biggest draw, however, may be canoeing — in fact, it’s home to at least two dozen canoe outfitters. Ely hosts a wide variety of recreational, arts and music events throughout the year, ranging from the Blueberry/Art Festival in July , to the Harvest Moon Festival in September , to the Winter Festival in February .

The premier canoeing and fishing destination in Minnesota, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness offers more than 1 million acres of pristine beauty in the Superior National Forest , including almost 150 miles along the Canadian border, over 1,000 miles of canoe routes, more than 2,000 campsites and a dozen hiking trails. The International Wolf Center’s mission “advances the survival of wolf populations by teaching about wolves, their relationship to wildlands and the human role in their future.” The center includes a live wolf exhibit with “ambassador” wolves, daily programs and film presentations.

Visit the North American Bear Center

The nonprofit North American Bear Center is dedicated to dispelling myths about bears. It works closely with bear researchers to curate its exhibits and content. The center features “ambassador” black bears, a theater, interpretive nature trails, a gift shop and daily programs.
