Baptist megachurch announces expansion to Rochester

Minnesota’s Baptist megachurch is expanding again — with a new church in Rochester.

Eagle Brook Church, with eight locations in the metro area, made the announcement during services on Sunday, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.

The Rochester church will open in October, church officials said, in the Mayo Civic Center, 30 Civic Center Drive.

Eagle Brook is the nation’s 10th largest church, according to a 2018 survey of Outreach Magazine. The church now averages about 22,000 worshippers weekly.

The nation’s largest church is Church of the Highlands in Birmingham, Ala., with 43,000 weekly visitors.

Eagle Brook built its first large-scale facility in Lino Lakes in 2005. In 2007, it pioneered a way of delivering church services — with televised simulcasts of the sermons and other parts of the service from a central location.

The church received a gift of $17 million from an anonymous source in 2015. According to the church’s 2017-18 annual report, Eagle Brook has a general fund of $42 million.

There are no immediate plans to build a separate church building in Rochester. In the past, the church has started branches in rented spaces, then built new facilities as the attendance grew.

Eagle Brook has satellite churches in Anoka, Woodbury, Lakeville, Lino Lakes, Blaine, Spring Lake Park, Wayzata and White Bear Lake.
