HILL CITY — A 14-year-old boy apparently driving on a highway on his own Sunday, Oct. 18, swerved to miss a deer and the vehicle rolled over.

The crash reported at 10:01 p.m. occurred on Highway 169, just south of Hill City, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The state patrol stated the teen was driving an Oldsmobile Alero south on the highway when he swerved to miss a deer and the vehicle left the roadway, rolled over and came to rest in the ditch on its wheels. The teen was taken to Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital in Grand Rapids.

The state patrol, which did not release the teen’s name, reported it was unknown if the boy wore a seat belt. Specifics on the circumstances surrounding the young teen’s use of the car were not provided. In Minnesota, drivers must be 16 years old to obtain a provisional driver’s license.

The Aitkin and Itasca county sheriff offices and the Hill City medics assisted at the scene.
