2,000 hogs die, barn destroyed in Hector area fire

HECTOR - About 1,400 adult hogs and 600 piglets died Wednesday as the result of the fire that also destroyed a barn about four miles west of Hector.

The Renville County Sheriff’s Office received several 911 calls shortly after noon reporting the fire, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

Upon arrival, emergency personnel discovered that portions of the barn, which was comprised of several different segments, were fully involved with fire.

Winds aided the fire, which spread quickly throughout the entire facility.

Several fire departments were called in to assist the Hector Fire Department, including fire departments from Buffalo Lake, Bird Island, Olivia and Fairfax as well as the Hector Ambulance Service.

Tens of thousands of gallons of water were shuttled to the fire scene from neighboring cities.

An excavator was brought to the scene to pull the building apart in order to extinguish the remaining fire.

No firefighters or facility employees were injured during the event, according to the release.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated by the Renville County Sheriff’s Office and the value of loss is not yet known.
