Pequot Lakes High School seniors Desera Engholm and Marcus Klein were selected to represent Pequot Lakes in the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award program, Marc Helmrichs, activities director at the school, announced.
Established in 1988, the Triple "A" Award is sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League. The award goes to high school seniors who have a B or better GPA and who participate in league-sponsored athletics and fine arts activities. Each school may nominate one boy and one girl, who then compete against other schools at the subsection, section and state levels.
Engholm and Klein are active members in the school community.
Engholm, the daughter of Angie and Robert Engholm, carries a 3.2 GPA while participating in choir, cross-country and track. She has received a superior rating each year she has been in choir. Engholm was a captain of the cross-country team this past fall and qualified for the state track and field meet last spring in both the shot put and discus. She finished seventh in shot put and fourth in the discus. Engholm plans to attend Central Lakes College next year and pursue her associate degree. She also plans to be a member of the choir while attending CLC.
Klein, the son of Angie and Jed Klein, participates in band, football, basketball and baseball. Klein has a 3.5 GPA. Klein has been a captain of the football team and all-conference in both football and baseball. He participated in the state football tournament as a junior. In band, Klein received superior ratings twice. Klein plans to attend St. John's University to enter the nursing program and become a member of the baseball team.

Triple "A" Award recipients are selected by a multi-level process involving the league's member schools and administrative regions. League officials will announce the four state award recipients-a girl and a boy from both a Class A and Class AA school-at an on-court recognition during the state boys basketball tournament.
