In 2019, lakes area notable Quinn Nystrom took her advocacy for diabetics to the next level, garnering international attention by tapping into one of the most pressing issues of national affairs — the United State’s exorbitant and dysfunctional health care system.

In the process, Nystrom energized thousands, launched a congressional campaign and introduced the term “insulin caravan” to the American lexicon. Her push for a more humane and rational health care for diabetics was highlighted by organizing “caravans” into Canada to purchase insulin at a fraction of the cost stateside, but her message also took form in rallies, lobbying lawmakers and interviews with news outlets across the globe.

"I think it's baby steps," Nystrom said during an interview May 15. "But, we've yet to see a bill passed that helps with diabetes affordability. Not one cent in the cost of insulin has come down. Until the price of insulin comes down, I'm not declaring victory.
