Skeptical statements made by Brainerd School Board President Sue Kern about the theory of evolution and whether it should be taught in the district sparked a flurry of reaction and letters to the editor.
Kern questioned the validity of teaching the theory of evolution to students — particularly those of the Christian faith — during an update on biology curriculum provided to the board. Science teacher Craig Rezac replied the theory of evolution has been well-documented with numerous contributions to the sciences. He added in his view, Christianity and science could coexist. Teaching evolution is mandated by education standards set by the state of Minnesota.
