Three Brainerd High Schools students were recently named National Merit Scholarship finalists.
Matthew Greatens, Adam Kleist and Nathanael Lockwood are three of the finalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship program.
These finalists have the chance to compete for about 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $33 million.
To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and about half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the preliminary SAT/national merit scholarship qualifying test during their junior year of high school.
Greatens is the son of Todd and Barbara Greatens of Nisswa. Kleist is the son of Gary and Sandi Kleist of Brainerd. Lockwood is the son of Lee and Dawn Lockwood of Baxter.
