3-vehicle crash injures 3 near Walker

Three people were injured in a fiery, three-vehicle crash Wednesday, July 22, in Shingobee Township north of Walker.

The Minnesota State Patrol reports 18-year-old Layne Alexander Hassel of Blackduck was driving northbound on Highway 371 at 3:39 p.m. Wednesday, while passing another vehicle. Hassel’s 2003 GMC Sierra collided with the rear end of a northbound 2017 GMC Savana, which was stopped farther north on Highway 371 waiting to take a left turn onto Ruffled Grouse Drive. The Sierra then bounced into oncoming traffic, hitting a southbound 2003 Honda Pilot, driven by 68-year-old Jon William Putzier. The Sierra then caught fire.

Hassel was transported to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. Putzier and his passenger, 51-year-old Jeanette Marie Lindsey, both of Walker, were transported to CHI St. Joseph’s Health in Park Rapids for non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Savana, 53-year-old Daniel Kent Knowles of Laporte, was not injured. All parties involved were wearing seatbelts.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office and Walker Fire Department assisted on scene.
