A fire outside a Brainerd auto body business Sunday was extinguished before it had a chance to spread to the interior, the owner reported.

Ten Brainerd firefighters were dispatched to River Road Auto Body shortly before 2:15 p.m. Sunday, located just north of the railroad tracks at 111 E. River Road near the Brainerd Fire Hall. A pile of trash outside the building was burning, according to an anonymous caller, and had spread to an electrical pole by the time the department received the call.

According to Ron Majersky of Brainerd, owner of the business, the fire was contained to the exterior and caused no damage to customers' vehicles inside the shop. The interior did sustain some water damage due to water entering through a window broken by the heat of the fire.

"I was extremely lucky," Majersky said. "It could have been so much worse."

Majersky said a passerby noticed the flames and tried to put them out before realizing the fire was out of control. The cause of the fire was unknown Sunday.

"Somehow some of the cardboard started on fire," Majersky said. "I'm not sure if it's just from the hot sun or if someone was messing around back there."

Majersky said he will not have to close his business because of the fire, although he will likely spend the morning today cleaning up.
