ST. PAUL — Gov. Mark Dayton and Lt. Gov. Tina Smith plan to attend the funeral on Friday for Aitkin County Deputy Steven Sandberg, killed in the line of duty Oct. 18, Dayton's office said.

Services for Sandberg are scheduled for 11 a.m. at Aitkin High School in Aitkin.

Dayton also ordered that all U.S. and Minnesota flags be flown at half-staff at all state and federal buildings, from sunrise until sunset on Friday.

"Deputy Steven Sandberg honorably served the people of Aitkin County for 24 years as a member of the Aitkin County Sheriff's Office, and courageously volunteered as a firefighter with the Aitkin Fire Department for 17 years," a release from Dayton's office said Thursday. "Deputy Sandberg was regarded as a good neighbor and an active member of his church, and he will be missed by his family, colleagues and friends."

The release went on to acknowledge Sandberg's service to fellow Minnesotans.

"The State of Minnesota, with its deepest gratitude, recognizes Deputy Sandberg for his dedicated service to, and sacrifice for, his fellow citizens of Minnesota," it said. "The thoughts and prayers of Minnesotans are with his family, friends and all who knew him."

At the direction of the Governor, Minnesota flies its flags at half-staff following the deaths of Minnesota police officers killed in the line of duty, on the day of interment, the release said.
