It's just a small drop in the large bucket of funds needed to save the Brainerd historic water tower, but the community raised $1,128 so far.
That money came from donations boxes at last week's Crow Wing County Fair. Fairboard members spearheaded the effort and will turn the money over to Brainerd Community Action, which will act as the fiduciary agent for the donations.
The Brainerd City Council decided Monday, Aug. 6, to give the community two years to raise funds for the tower before making any other decisions. In the meantime, the council agreed to three other measures regarding the tower: to organize a citizens committee as a grassroots method to help raise funds; to maintain a protective fence and other security measures around the tower and the entrance of Breen & Person for three years; and to earmark funds each year during the next three years to account for the roughly $300,000 estimated for the demolition of the tower, as that taxpayer money will be needed whether the tower stays or goes.
Anyone who wants to donate to the cause can send donations to: Brainerd Water Tower, ℅ Brainerd Community Action, 213 S. Fifth St., Brainerd, MN 56401.
