The Brainerd School Board closed its meeting partway through its Monday, March 18, meeting to discuss acquiring 10 properties to help further renovations and additions at four school facilities.
Minnesota statutes 13.44 and 13D.05 allow government bodies to close a meeting involving data classified as not public. In this case, the purpose of the closed meeting was to discuss appraised values of private properties and negotiations to purchase the properties.
The properties discussed are near Brainerd High School and Lowell, Harrison and Garfield elementary schools.
After more than an hour spent in closed session, the board opened the meeting back up and authorized the acquisition of the following properties:
• 704 S. Sixth St.
• 710 S. Sixth St.
• 620 Third Ave. NE.
• 1203 11th Ave. NE.
• 1207 11th Ave. NE.
• 1616 Norwood St.
• A property on Norwood St. with no address listed, parcel No. 091810160040009.
• 501 16th St. SE.
• 515 16th St. SE.
• 509 16th St. SE.
These properties are a portion of those the district set out to acquire last fall to add more parking stalls to school facilities. After hearing feedback from both residents and city officials, the district scaled down its original acquisition list, which consisted of 27 properties.
There was no further discussion on the properties during the open session.
Also during the closed session, the board discussed "offers or counteroffers for the purchase or sale" of properties on Jasperwood Drive, Mapleton Road and Knollwood Drive to be used for the new elementary school in Baxter, as well as 505 16th St. SE and 1601 Oak St. The board did not take action on any of those properties during the open meeting.
