Thanks to funding from a Minnesota Power Foundation grant and donations of seeds from the Ratliff family and Prairie Road Organic Seed Co., the Pine River Seed Library was able to greatly increase the varieties of seeds available.
These seeds are free to all with the proviso that seed borrowers complete membership and seed forms for record-keeping and funding purposes. The seed library staff encourages those who borrow seeds and have a good growing season to save seed for themselves and return some to the library in the fall.
The seed library is housed in the Pine River Library. Since it is set up for self service, seeds and information are available whenever the library is open.
Seed varieties are organized in the seed cupboard in order of ease of saving seed. Information on how to save seed is available at the seed library as is a number to call with questions.
In addition, the seed library will offer a hands-on seed saving class through Pine River-Backus Community Education in September.
