Black Friday is no longer limited to hours or a day with weeks of Black Friday advertisements part of the fall experience long before Thanksgiving.

But Black Friday, or Black Thursday, still beckons to shoppers searching for deals and the experience, even if it has changed dramatically in recent years. For the consumer, it means there are many more avenues to fill their shopping list, with the pre-Black Friday sales, doorbusters on Black Friday and sales throughout the weekend.

The National Retail Federation reports about 165 million Americans are expected to shop during the five days between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday, including Small Business Saturday sandwiched in between on Nov. 30.

For those who would rather avoid the crowds, the holiday shopping season has just begun in earnest and there will be more options ahead.

And though a growing number of Americans say they'll be buying online this holiday season, retailers are continuing their tradition of in-store doorbusters and ever-earlier openings, the Washington Post reported.

In good news for indoor malls, Bloomberg reported U.S. mall foot traffic rose 2.5% for the latest four-week period from a year earlier, as the Thanksgiving holiday approached, according to Thasos Mall REIT Foot Traffic Index. Bloomberg noted growth, as shown by mobile phone usage in malls, had slowed in September and October ahead of the key shopping season.
