The Brainerd Parks Board canceled all 2020 youth summer programs.
Board members reviewed Gov. Tim Walz’s Executive Order 20-74, along with the Minnesota Health Department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for youth activities in making its decision. The board also discussed the fact that summer youth programs normally end in July, saying it’s too late in the season to start up programs.
State health department and CDC guidelines are rather stringent when considering youth activities, a news release from the parks and recreation department stated. Recommendations for youths include not sharing equipment when possible, disinfecting and cleaning benches and program equipment between use, social distancing, wearing cloth face masks, maintaining health checks and screenings of participants and staff/volunteers, minimizing crowding between friends and family of the participants, and adapting practices, which allow physical distancing.
Brainerd Parks and Recreation facilities – including restrooms, fields and playgrounds – remain open for the public to use. Restrooms are cleaned and sanitized once daily. Pavilion reservations for groups of 25 or less are being accepted, as are Lum Park Campground reservations.
