CASS LAKE — The Chippewa National Forest, after extensive planning and preparation, scheduled two prescribed fires for May 9 and May 10 north of Walker.
Dates of the prescribed fire could vary depending on weather conditions.
Fire personnel plan to complete a 153-acre and a 232-acre prescribed fire on Oak Point off Leech Lake, 6 miles north of Walker and 3 miles east of State Highway 371.
While fire crews are on location, columns of smoke will be visible from long distances including Cass Lake, Walker, and the Highway 371 and Highway 2 corridors.
The oak and pine stands adjacent to numerous homes, cabins, resorts were previously treated with prescribed fire in 2019. This second entry to the area will continue to help reduce hazardous fuels and restore ecosystem functions.
