The shape of the state of Minnesota is a recognizable one likely seared into the memories of those who've lived-no matter how long-in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
Such was the case for Robert Sellzler, who grew up in Bemidji but spent much of his adult life living in Paris, Idaho, while working for Potlatch. While spending time near the Antoine Peak Conservation Area in southeastern Washington state, Sellzler stumbled upon a volcanic rock bearing the familiar shape of Minnesota.
"I was walking around in the mountains, near where the highway cut through a lava field," Sellzler said.
The type of lava the rock was formed from, Sellzler said, breaks into various shapes as it cools. This particular piece reminded him of his childhood home. Sellzler, 73, took the rock home with him and also along to Brainerd when he made the move back to the Gopher State a year ago.
"Someone who wasn't from Minnesota probably would not have noticed it," said Rose Peterson, Sellzler's sister.
