'Twas the day before Thanksgiving, and all throughout Harrison, paper turkeys lined the walls as students chatted with kin. Anxiously waiting for the holiday, they said, while visions of pie danced in their heads.

Kindergartners pointed to their decorated tablecloths and festive crafts on display as they eagerly greeted their parents in the gym at Harrison Elementary for a shared Thanksgiving meal Wednesday, Nov. 21.

The kids also shared tidbits about their family's Thanksgiving traditions.

Thanksgiving favorites

Family, friends and pumpkin pie topped the lists for their favorite things about Thanksgiving. For Emelia Stienka, it's all about "caring for someone you love," while Joceline Bravo likes being with family, and Ethan Nyiri's favorite thing is spending time with his friends.

Holiday traditions

Stienka's family gives out Thanksgiving presents, "like chocolate bars and presents they love," she said.

Andromeda Smith said she carves pumpkins before eating pumpkin pie each year.

"We sit together to eat," Eli Pulak said. "And always at Thanksgiving they let me drink pop."

Pumpkin pie isn't the only dessert in Amiya Hanson's house-her family eats carrot cake too.

Bravo travels away from home to her grandma and grandpa's house.

Making pumpkin pie

As pumpkin pie is her favorite, Stienka pays close attention to how her mom makes it.

"First you just knead dough into the shape of a pie, and then you just take out pulp of a pumpkin, and then you bake it inside the dough, and then you wait until the timer dings on your oven, and then you take it out. That's how my mom makes pumpkin pie. It's a pretty quick way," she said.
