Willmar man killed in crash in Kerkhoven

KERKHOVEN, Minn. – A Willmar man is dead following a one-vehicle crash Sunday night, Nov. 18, when his vehicle became airborne and hit a commercial building in Kerkhoven.

According to a news release from the Swift County Sheriff’s Office, Shane Mitchell Broten, 48, was traveling east on Highway 12 when the vehicle went off the roadway and into the north ditch toward 15th Street.

The vehicle went airborne over 15th Street, where it struck a concrete vacuum base at Tam’s Car Wash.

The vehicle then spun and struck the side of the building.

Broten was taken to Rice Hospital in Willmar, where he later died of his injuries.

According to the sheriff’s report, alcohol and drugs are suspected to be a factor in the crash.
